    Transatlantic trip - Which Airline?

I will be travelling from the UK to the USA next month. There are lots of airlines to choose from, Delta, United, Continental, US Airways  as well as BA, Lufthansa and KLM etc.

What airlines would you recommend, and which ones are the ones to avoid.

My destination is Roanoke VA, so I expect to have to change at least once if not twice as I'm not restricting myself to flying the transatlantic trip direct from Manchester.

Personally I would recommend None of the Above and go with Virgin Atlantic, they are quite good with looking after you while in flight and it can be quite relaxing! BUT I don't think they are all that cheap!

FYI I can't speak from personal experience as I've never gone Trans-Atlantic in the Real World but when I went to Spain with Virgin Sun it was a very relaxing experience and apparently it's the same with the Atlantic.

I've had no bad experience with British airways. Friendly crew, tidy aircraft, pretty good food for airline grub, and nice personal entertainment on the 747 longhaul. The captain even came down and talked to me and my classmates when we asked the cabin crew to tell him we where student pilots. He had been to the same school as I'm going to now. I was pleasantly surprised.

The shorthaul I did with them was nice too.

Never been a fan of US carriers internationally. I've flown SAS, Lufthansa, Finnair and Air Canada with no qualms whatsoever. BA would probably be your best bet, followed by KLM. Lufthansa air hosts (I like stewardess a ton better but I digress) are hit or miss: either the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet or they're cold, unfeeling, and rather.....indifferent.

Re: Transatlantic trip - Which Airline?

Maybe a little off the topic, but I remember going down the long escalators at Dulles airport, and coming up the other side was an entire flight crew in their dark blue uniforms. There were a lot of them so it must have been a 'heavy'.

The sharpest looking group of people I've ever seen...pilots right off a Hollywood set and beautiful FAs with not a hair out of place. We stared at them shamelessly as they went by.  At least I did.

Wish I knew what airline. I want to cross the pond with THEM :)

Sorry I can't help you more than that. Last time I crossed the Atlantic it was on an Aer Lingus 747-100.  In 1987.

Re: Transatlantic trip - Which Airline?

Personally I've flown KLM and Lufthansa across the pond and had very good experiences with both.  If I had too choose, I like KLM the best because I was a little cramped in my seat (I'm 6' 6") and they bumped me to business class for free!

My uncle flies to Europe a lot and usually flies Continental without complaint.

Re: Transatlantic trip - Which Airline?

Well if we go down that road, I'd have to say fly with Airberlin, but I wouldn't recommend them long haul, way to cramped seating. But shorthaul they are the best I've ever flown, amazing value for money.
