Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

    Hello,

I was recently thinking on a flight back from CYQT to KBOS flying on VATSIM ( Like I always do ) how many people fly with failures on. I have my realism set all the way up to the max for everything, enable engine damage from stress, as high as everything will go as I want it all. The only thing I am lacking is failures. Granted, a well maintained aircraft shouldn't have anything big pop up. What are your failure settings and do you use them online? Im afraid to turn them on on VATSIM as being number 4 for an ILS approach flying by hand online isn't always in the best interest/easist thing to do.

I like the failure feature but I dont want to cause any log jams online either. Any advice or recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Pat

Hi Pat, I am kind of like you in that I don't want to cause any log jams either and it could be a problem for others.  Also some of these airplanes fly kind of strange on one engine climb outs etc. in FS9.  So I generally do not enable failures on VATSIM.  My two cents for the day.

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

    Pat,

The controllers should know how to direct you in the event of a failure.  So you can leave your failures on.  I only use FSPax failures when i fly.  Being # 4 in line and having a failure is something that happened to me in Miami last year.  There were 3 in front of me and 5 behind inbound on ILS 9R i had an electrical failure and the main gear didnt lock down but maintained my position and landed safely.  As long as you know what you need to do in event of a failure you should be alright.  As always you can request emergency landings on VATSIM and the active controller should hold everyone in position on the ground and divert all airborn planes to a holding pattern until you are safely down.

    Hope this helps

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

VATSIM controllers are trained to handle failures in the same way as our real world counterparts, and the procedure for declaring an emergency is likewise the same.  VATSIM controllers will respond to your emergency in as realistic a way possible and give you vectors to the nearest field/priority clearance/etc.

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

Thanks for the input everyone! Yea im still on the fence on this as I don't want to be the nay sayer that declares an emerency and ruins everyones day but just like in real life flying you gotta do what you gotta do!

What is FSPax failures? Im unfamilar with this term. Im guessing I can just put random failures enabled just hope its not frequently, lol. How would I log hours too say on a scheduled flight say KBOS-KSLC I have to divert to say KSTL? I guess I could land, repair failures log that flight, then continue onto KSLC from there.

Thanks again to the quick responses,

    Pat

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

FSPax = FS Passengers it is an add on program for FS9. which simulates carrying passengers, cargo, beverage service, food, gives a detailed report of your flight at the end.  You can set failures from easy to hard and from None to 100%

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

Isn't it the case that some VATSIM controllers do not allow emergencies?  I believe that is indicated in the ATC list.  I have been on VATSIM before where someone tried to declare an emergency and the controller didn't allow it.

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

Just to cover something that wasn't already covered in this post: Emergencys with no atc (on unicom which i beleive is 122.8)

I was flying a flight on Vatsim on the POSKY CRJ-200 out of BOS, (just some background info: if you've flown the posky crj, you'll know that while taking off, it has really sudden and jerky movements which have caused ALOT of unexpected tail strikes for me) I had one other guy at BOS and not atc, so i tookoff with the Eastern Virtual guy holding behind me, when on my t/o roll i had a tail strike and after taking off declared an emegency over unicom and got a timely response from the guy behind me who was lined up that hes vacating the rwy. (unless there in a bad mood, just about everyone on vatsim is very helpfull and freindly, whether they've been on vatsim for a few days or a few years) So i turned 180 degrees and just barley managed to land, then i taxied off the rwy, apoligized and thanked the Eastern guy and logged off.

So really, when theres no atc its ok to practice/decrlare emergencys as long as your not delaying any one else or ruining someones flight on VATSIM.

    my two cents.

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

I have failures turned on when I fly on VATSIM. I turn them off when I fly big events or Friday Night Ops into areas I do not know real well. But when there is not an event going on most ATC like the fun of some thing new.

I moved this thread to On-Line Operations for you. I'll see you on Vatsim. Have fun.

Re: Do you enable failures on VATSIM?

Good point Michael.  Trying to point and click is slow and un-realistic in heavy traffic on climb out when VATSIM is so busy you can not get a word in edgewise and your right engine blows. How about flying one of our Lear charters out of Peachtree and both engines fail because you have ingested so many birds from the dump north of the airport  (circa 1973)   That is totally real.  Now your 1 hour flight takes 7 minutes and you get to start again.   Not my idea of fun.
