Fairbanks (PAFA) to Will Rogers Memorial (PABR) WWA3163A

    Route: FAI J515 BRW

    Dep Time: 0014Z

    Arr Time: 0132Z

    Block Time (Est): 1.25

    Remarks:

What a flight! Took off in lovely weather, had great scenery enroute, but it was a little cloudy. Got more cloudy as I got nearer Will Rogers. The winds were 17 knots at 210 so I had to bring her in without an ILS on runway 24 with visibility of 6 miles and a 8/8 cloud lair at 200ft with mist. Came in initially on the visual, went straight over the field, went into left IFR circuts, tuned the VOR frequency and set myself up to intercept nice and low, nice and slow. Was at 2000ft, 14 miles DME, no airport in sight. Turned off AP and brought her down to about 400-500ft, finally I seen the PAPI lights, flew it in very low to land on a tiny runway, in an airport that can only be described as a shed, a taxiway and a runway! Great fun!

Flying it in the second time was like flying an oversized C150 with a blindfold! I love Alaska, everytime I come up here, something amazing happens! Usually the weather too!! Stick out tongue

A couple of places i like to make it into when i go fly in alaska are dutch harbor, skagaway, and Golden Horn Lodge (3Z8)

Dutch Harbor is just fun to fly into because of the short strip and depending on your approach you either have to drop in or pull a hard turn in order to make it down on the field. Skagaway is another place to do the same thing however, its in a valley so its a little bit more challenging.  Finally i just like Golden Horn because its a remote lake with some interestin approach opptions for a float plane.
